The RIDDLE

the riddle
by Unknown
I am your constant companion.
I’m either your greatest helper or heaviest burden.
I will push you forward or drag you down to failure.
I am totally at your command.
Half the things you do might just as well be given to me
to do. I’ll be able to do them quickly and correctly.
I am easily managed – but you’d better be firm with me.
Show me exactly how you want something done and after
a few lessons I’ll automatically do it without you saying a word.
I am the faithful servant of all great successes and all great failures.
Those who are great, I made great.
Those who are failures, I made failures.
I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of one and with all the intelligence of a person.
You may run me for profit or run me for ruin—it makes no difference to me.
Take me and train me, being firm with me, and I’ll place the world at your feet.
Be easy with me, letting me do what I want, and I will destroy you.
Who am I?
I am habit.
